With it’s relatively small list of tweaks, mostly security related, the latest iPhone OS update has proven to be about as exciting as watching paint dry. Many speculate that the new update was released exclusively to frustrate the jailbreak community. While this may be the case, the frustration did not last long thanks to the work of the iPhone Dev-Team. The team of iPhone whizzes announced this morning the release of their latest version of PwnageTool (v3.1.5 for Mac OS X) that allows jailbreakers to the update their devices to iPhone OS 3.1.3 while preserving the device’s ultrasn0w unlock and jailbroken state.

Earlier this week Apple told iPhone app developers that they will not be allowed to use the device’s GPS data to serve location-specific advertisements to users of App Store software.

The notification, sent through the “News and Announcements for iPhone Developers” RSS feed, included a tip on the “Core Location” framework included in the iPhone OS software development kit. Developers using the GPS in the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS can determine the location of users – but not for any and all purposes. The data can only be used to provide “beneficial information” to the device user.

iPhone 3.1.3 update resolves five dangerous bugs

On Tuesday Apple released an iPhone and iPod Touch security update to close five vulnerabilities, some of which could have allowed hackers to introduce malicious code to the devices.

The new iPhone operating system (version 3.1.3), which is also to be installed on the iPod Touch, closes dangerous flaws in CoreAudio, ImageIO and WebKit that could permit arbitrary code execution.
In the case of CoreAudio, malware could be loaded onto a device if a user is tricked into playing a maliciously crafted MP4 audio file. The ImageIO bug allows malware to be installed if a user views a maliciously crafted TIFF image.

Because Apple did not mention the long anticipated iPhone 4G at their Jan 27th media event many have become concerned that the rumors of a new iPhone may be just that. Rumors. Those of you can now relax. The ever-so-smart internet tipsters have told us that they have discovered the codename of the next iPhone buried deep within the frameworks of the recently released SDK.

Apple Releases iPhone 3.1.3 for All iPhone, iPod touch Devices

Apple has just released iPhone 3.1.3, a minor OS update for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod touch G1, iPod touch G2, and iPod touch 3G.

The update release states that it includes:

  • Fix for iPhone 3GS battery level reporting
  • Fix for app crashes on launch
  • Fix for app crashes while using Japanese Kana Keyboard
