There have been two patent applications published recently from Apple that caught our attention for their innovativeness. The first patent shows how to use the iPhone’s camera as an alternate input method that utilizes gestures while the second details a system that uses a uniquely shaped signet to log in to a computer.

iControlPad for iPhone development team says release imminent

The iControlPad team has announced that the release of their new product is ‘imminent’. It appears that the basic iControlPad will be a simple sleeve into which the iPhone is placed.  The device will offer a D-pad and two analog joysticks, four control buttons and two function keys (Start and Select).  The upgraded model will include a battery which can be used to recharge the iPhone/iPod touch to help maintain the device’s power during gaming.

Nokia’s official blog ‘Nokia Conversations’ released a video this week featuring a senior VP from Nokia’s smartphone division. When something like this happens we at ifonenation stop and pay attention because we have learned throughout the years that you never know what might be revealed during a (semi?) scripted, informal chat such as this one. In the video, Jo Harlow, Nokia’s Senior Vice President of Smartphones is asked about Nokia’s future smartphone technologies and experiences allowing her to dive into a discussion about using augmented reality as a means to enhance existing Nokia services, specifically as such can be used to enhance the experience in apps like Ovi Maps.

With it’s relatively small list of tweaks, mostly security related, the latest iPhone OS update has proven to be about as exciting as watching paint dry. Many speculate that the new update was released exclusively to frustrate the jailbreak community. While this may be the case, the frustration did not last long thanks to the work of the iPhone Dev-Team. The team of iPhone whizzes announced this morning the release of their latest version of PwnageTool (v3.1.5 for Mac OS X) that allows jailbreakers to the update their devices to iPhone OS 3.1.3 while preserving the device’s ultrasn0w unlock and jailbroken state.

Earlier this week Apple told iPhone app developers that they will not be allowed to use the device’s GPS data to serve location-specific advertisements to users of App Store software.

The notification, sent through the “News and Announcements for iPhone Developers” RSS feed, included a tip on the “Core Location” framework included in the iPhone OS software development kit. Developers using the GPS in the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS can determine the location of users – but not for any and all purposes. The data can only be used to provide “beneficial information” to the device user.
