TomTom says turn-by-turn app ready; Waiting on Apple

Posted August 16th, 2008 by GenghisPhlip

We reported earlier that one major GPS company has already been working on getting it’s software ported to the iPhone, and now accorcing to a story at MSNBC. TomTom has gone on the record saying that its iPhone software “looks good and works well”.

TomTom announced early on to the app development world that they were working on bringing their app to the iPhone but their quest was quashed by the wording of Apple’s SDK agreement which specifically bans real time navigation apps from being developed for the device. Since their announcement, both Garmin and Magellan have shown similar interest in developing their own GPS software for the iPhone but as of this writing, neither has had anything to report so far.

So what is everyone waiting on? Apple. It seems that Apple now has a decision to make: whether or not to allow turn-by-turn GPS applications even though they are currently against the terms of the iPhone SDK. Moniker 9 cites another article which states that a turn-by-turn GPS solution will be released by one of these companies for the iPhone in the next 1 to 3 months but it really wouldn’t surprise anyone if Apple already has an app of it’s own in the works.

It has been reported that the GPS system built into the iPhone 3G was one of the more costly upgrades made by Apple for the new device so It would seem natural that they would want to create their own app to take advantage of it’s functionallity and of course try to recoup some of the money spent on development.

I read that TomTom is considering releasing their app for jailbreak. Now I can’t find where I read it. Anyone else hear this?
