iPhone DevTeam formally announces PwnageTool 2.0
Posted July 27th, 2008 by GenghisPhlipWe have been playing with the new PwnageTool for several days now but it was just last night that the iPhone DevTeam formally announced the new tool. PwnageTool 2.0 has made jailbreaking a snap for people who are using iPhone 2.0 and mac OS X. We have an easy tutorial for the PwnageTool posted here.
Their announcement stated:
The iPhone DevTeam formally announces the availability of “PwnageTool 2.0”.
This tool is the much anticipated revision to the original PwnageTool application for 1.x iPhone and iPod devices.
Version 2.0 of the tool adds several features to the original release including :-
A totally new and reworked User-Interface, A step-by-step mode for beginners, Spotlight file discovery Support for iPhone OS 2.0 for iPhone, iPod Touch and preliminary support for the iPhone 3G.PwnageTool is the first “Jailbreak” for the 3G iPhone that will allow “on device” development and also allows users to install non-AppStore based third-party applications.
PwnageTool does not yet offer a software unlock for the 3G baseband, but will unlock the baseband on 2.0 OS for the 1st generation iPhone.
The very anticipated tool caused huge amounts of network traffic to the DevTeam site when they held off the release for several days in order to “Make sure that it was easy enough to use and bug free”. While in the opinion of most users the DevTeam failed on both fronts, the tool was finally streamlined enough for novices and experts alike to effect jailbreak. Most complaints (once jailbreak was achieved) revolved around the use of Cydia as an application installer instead of the familiar and much loved installer.app.
The PwnageTool can be downloaded here.
