List and review of currently available Cydia apps
Posted July 25th, 2008 by GenghisPhlipUpdated: 8/6/08
Jailbreakers of the new iPhone 2.0 firmware are noticing that both the PwnageTool 2.0 and WinPwn 2.0 package Cydia as an application installer instead of the familiar installer.app. While the core function of these two applications is almost identical, many have noticed that the vast list of applications that were available on installer.app are not currently present in Cydia.
This is because those apps are just now being ported to Cydia. The following is a list of the apps that Cydia currently offers as well as a brief review. This list will be updated frequently as more apps are ported so don’t forget to check back here often.
BossPrefs for those of you who are not familiar, is a tool that you can use to totally modify your iPhone. It has been hugely popular with first gen jailbreakers and I am sure that it will be with the new 2.0 platform as well. The version that you will currently find on Cydia is v2.0.2a (alpha). This is the first working version of BossPrefs for 2.0 devices. You may see some issues but the major functions should work. The airplane / phone toggles are not implemented, the add plugin GUI is not implemented, and there may be some other minor issues. Double tap home needs some work. BigBoss reports that The bulk of it works. “I put it out immediately because there was no other way to toggle SSH. Will update it again very soon.” We’ll bring you a report on those updates as soon as BigBoss releases them.
Poof is an app hider. This app is also integrated into BossPrefs but because Poof was out a couple days earlier it shows up as a separate app. For those that want to hide apps without BossPrefs, this is what you are looking for.
UPDATE 8/2/08: For those of you that do not use BossPrefs, Poof has been updated to v2.10 for firmware 2.0 only with the same changes. Note: for anyone that has both apps installed, you must update both or you will have problems with hidden icons that one app hides and the other cannot unhide.
The NES Emulator ported by Nervegas has been extremely popular with jailbreakers so far. So popular in fact that this was the very first app in the Cydia repository. You can enjoy all of your old NES games. For more information on the NES emulator and ROMS click here.
UPDATE 8/2/08: The NES app was updated a few days ago. The new version is v2.3.0. and it adds accelerometer support (excellent!).
The respring app has ported to 2.0. It was used this during the development of poof and BossPrefs to reset the springboard. However, this functionality is now fully integrated into BossPrefs in the Power button so you really do not have to have it unless you do not want BossPrefs (and I really cannot imagine anyone not wanting BossPrefs).
Flashlight: There are currently several flashlight apps offered through the App Store but in my opinion they all suck because Apple would not allow the developers to make the screen brighter. I have used the flashlight app a lot and highly recommend this one. It properly brightens the screen when you load it and also has the ability to strobe when you tap it.
Gojonnyboy made this nice reboot/respring/power off app called Power Tool. It existed for 1.1.4 and now has been ported to 2.0.
Metronome has been released. It’s a full featured metronome app made with the SDK but in Cydia for free. Very nice! (Sorry I don’t have the icon here. It seems to only be viewable on iPhone).
MacMan is an outstanding Pacman knock-off with a nice twist!
Play the redefined classic! Pilot Macman in 300+ exciting stages using the built-in accelerometer in your iPhone/iPod Touch.
FEATURES:
- Modern graphics & full screen gameplay
- 300+ stages & increasingly tougher A.I.
- Simple control with just motion sensor and touchscreen
- Never drop a game – autosave on picking up calls or exiting
- Friendly & Affordable – FREE and suitable for all ages
Quake4iPhone – Finally a cool jailbreak app. Definately a great way to end the weekend – Quake4iPhone has appeared on the Cydia installer. Click the link to read more.
Neverball has been updated to v1.4.1. The main changes here are to update the data files used to allow for NeverPutt. (Note:Neverball is now called NeverballME).
NeverPutt ME has been released. This is a nice Putt-Putt golf game based on the Neverball engine.
Finally! A themes app for 2.0. Because of the great work of Saurik, who developed Cydia, we now have Winterboard on 2.0 OS! Winterboard provides some of the functionality that SummerBoard provided but it will probably be a while before we have the full functionality that we have grown used to through Summerboard. Currently you can only select your theme, but you can expect this to be expanded in the future. (Note: the configuration GUI is not done yet).
Fortunately when Winterboard was released, many themes were also released into Cydia. For example, all of the Summerboard themes by BigBoss are now available for use through Winterboard. Some of the BigBoss favorites are shown here (from left to right, Xadacka’s Mystic Blue, iWood Realize, Chromium)
Jokes.app was ported today to 2.0. Jokes is an expandable Joke server app that randomly shows you jokes in a category of your choosing. Some of you may remember that we recently featured Jokes.app in our Crapplication list. This release seems fast, easy to use and just as worthless as the original release. On the upside, the creator reports that there are lots of extra joke packs available to install.
BigBoss announces that WebSearch is now ported for 2.0. According to the developer, WebSearch is a very handy app that saves lots of time especially on slow networks. Consider normal use of the web on say EDGE. You pull up a web page, you have to wait for it to load. You then get to the search page, wait for it to load, type in your search, wait for it to load. With WebSearch, you program in search criteria (based on firefox’s “add a keyword search”) and then you just click the search for the site, type the search string, and wait only one time for the search page to load with results. It also launches safari so you can hide your Safari icon with BossPrefs if you’d like.
BigBoss reports that he has ported iRCm to 2.0. Right now the app is pretty rough, but for the most part works as it did on 1.1.4. but the developer says it was never finished there either. it is the first and only GUI iRC client for iPhone 2.0. Note: this is ported from SVN 36 in googlecode.
Whirlwind21 is a new solitaire / 21 card game made for iPhone OS 2.0. Newly ported to Cydia.

hi people, can any one tell me if its posible to use Cydia in a brand new iPhone 3g? The black or white plastic back ones?
Thx guys!
Yes.
> This is because those apps are just now being ported to Cydia.
No, it’s because those apps are not yet ported to the new iPhone OS. Big difference. Cydia uses a different packaging scheme, but the software that is installed via either package management system is identical.
I miss swifi to fix the grey no wifi bug. Who maintains these apps on cydia. Would be nice to add swifi for the rest of us who suffer from this trouble. thanks
if cydia gets installed when using WINPWN, how do you get “installer” installed instead of cydia?
Seems like Installer has more apps available?!?
[...] is one list, and a longer list but I’m sure they are 2.0 or not. Some time next week I will jailbreak and test some of these [...]
Please work on Agile messenger through Cydia. Have no found a better messenger for the iphone to date. Regards.
I don’t see AFPd which I use all the time. Is there an equivalent tool available through Cydia so that I can still browse the file system from my Mac?
We need Agile messanger in cydia 2.0 PLEASE?
[...] This is old news but still good. Click here for our updated list of Cydia apps [...]
I would love to see the Catagories app in 2.0, or is there already something similar avaible?
Thanks in advance, Martin
It would be great to have a tool that lets you enable/disable bluetooth connection so that bluetooth headsets can be used with iPod functions. I know about the workaround that uses phone voicemail to enable this but it would be cool to have a separate app that can do the same thing.
Can any developers out there comment if this would be possible and how difficult it would be ?
I just got a iphone with 2.1 unlocked/jailbroken w/cydia installer…I saw a post about swap tunes.. other than that.. will it let me syn with my itunes library, or do I have to do a clean install of itunes and wipe out my library.. I also saw a post about being able to just drop the music on the device and it will sync. can someone confirm? i have flashed moto phones with rom images; but this phone is much more $$ don’t want to brick it.
it is in mail to me..so i don’t have it in hand yet for testing.
Can someone develop ISLSK for iphone 3g. Thanks. I would love to have this app for downloading mp3 songs.
cydia don’t have agile mobile application
how do i download app from cydia to my iphone… simple question but don’t laugh plz i am first time user of iphone 2.2 3g 16gb
cydia is the best thing ever look for cycorder in cydia if u want a video recorder
are the cydia applications free?
Yes, completely free. To access cydia you will need to Jailbreak your iPhone first. Once you have access to it, you just download themes, games and apps to your heart’s content!!
thanx its goood pps
They should really find a way to put Winamp on the iPhone, it will certainly surpass the cheap pandora and AOL radio that it has through Apple Apps.
Does anyone know the name of the cydia/winterboard that has the blue branches and shoots flames from the bottom?
if you plan on gettin all the really sweet utility apps out there in cydia world you should probably not theme the hell out of your device. sure that blue fire video wallpaper looks great with floating marble icons but you might see more crashes than actual use because of it. winterboard seems to be a prime suspect in the hijacking of available memory. since i got rid of it and stuck to matters of cool practicality the phone performs much better (although lately cydia will sometimes quit outta the blue) i’ll take problem free speed over flashy crashy anyday …
Hi, anyone having trouble with the audio through cycorder? Downloaded it today and video works fine. The audio is so low, though, it’s almost imperceptible. Any ideas?? Thanks!
@ Kim: Same problem here. I’ve tried everything. Kinda an app killer.
Hi, i was just wondering if there is an app from cydia to install to change carrier for the iphone 3g. its unlocked but cant get service.
thanks!
cycorder worls fine for me… are you covering the mic with your finger?? try to reinstall it maybe…

ps, i have so much to learn!!!
I will like to know the pro’s and con’s on jailbreaking a iPhone 3g and if it damages the phone
To get more cydia apps just download steffwiz from respitories(under selection) then after you download that download all sources (also under respitories).
Dude I wont even think about a 3g phone till hidepod and iblacklist are ported. Anyone know when??? My 2g broke and i really love ///NEED those apps.

Cobra – use the blackra1n program again – it will remove the reset required by apple and be fine.

Advantageously, the post is really the best on this deserving matter. I agree with your conclusions and tend to thirstily watch for any approaching updates. Saying thanks won’t just be enough, for your tremendous clarity in your writing. I’ll right away get your rss to be abreast of any posts. Good work and much success in your business efforts!
Hey man, I own a web site too and I hardly ever see junk comments on your blogposts. How do you find a way to stop all this? Does one just physically moderate the whole thing?
You can see all deb for cydia on this site http://www.cydia-iPhone-fr
Has anyone here ever played Evony? I suggest checking it out for anyone who wants to play something different, it’s free and will keep you entertained for quite a long time. I found a link that gives you some extra start up money when you sign up which helps massively for newbies so go through that if you want to try it out. Hope you guys love it.
