WinPwn 2.0 jailbreak using Windows instructions
Posted July 24th, 2008 by GenghisPhlipI just was able to jailbreak a first gen iPhone running 2.0 firmware with the new WinPwn 2.0 software for Windows. Here’s how I did it:
Some of the screenshots that you will see were made with 2.0.0.1. They will be the same as what you see with the exception of 2.0.0.1 being referenced where you will see 2.0.0.3.
First of all, Jailbreaking is not something that I would recommend. If you proceed know that there is a possibility of damage to your device and that by jailbreaking/attempting to jailbreak you will void your warranty. There are other warnings that apply here so be sure to read the readme file that will pop up once you have installed WinPwn 2.0. If none of this scares you then proceed:
Important Notes
Remove Winpwn 1.0 completely if you have it installed. Installing over the top of WinPwn 1.0 will cause problems.
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes ( Currently 7.7)
If you already have service with AT&T do not activate or install Youtube Fix
The First Step: Backup all of your data before you go any further. Otherwise, you risk losing it all!!! You will need to download a copy of WinPwn .
UPDATE: download WinPwn 2.0.0.3 here. [2.0.0.3 addresses the following issues: - Support for both 1.1.4 and 2.0
- Custom Image Support
- Custom Payload Support
- 3g iPhone support
- Support for WinXP and Vista 32/64bit. Note Windows 2003/2008 server (Yes SERVER) are not supported
neither is Windows 95 or Windows 3.11
The Second Step: Install the software (easy enough but I am putting it down for you here so you can see exactly what I saw and compare it to what you are seeing.
Extract the files to your desktop and you will see this icon:
Click on it and you will be presented with the setup screen:
Click on Run and you will get this screen:
Read the instructions, follow them then click Next and you will get this screen:
Click Next and you will see this screen:
Select the location you would like to install the software to then click Install (I just left this default and let it install to my Program Files folder). You will get a brief glimpse of the install process and then be presented with this screen (sorry, it went too fast for my screen capture software or I’d show you that too):
Click Finish
The Third Step: You will now have an icon on your desktop that looks like this:
Make sure that you have iTunes running then click the new icon and the program will launch. You will see the Haz WinPwn kitty cat for a few seconds and then the program (be prepared to wait about 10 to 15 seconds for it to initialize):
You will probably see the following errors appear in the program’s status window. This is ok.:
You will notice that some of the buttons on the left hand side of the program are greyed out. This is normal:
The Fourth Step: You will need to have a copy of firmware. First Gen iPhone or iPhone 3G (NOTE: THIS IS AN IPHONE ONLY FIRMWARE DO NOT USE IT WITH YOUR IPOD TOUCH). Click the Browse .ipsw button:
Then you will be given a browse box. Locate your firmware file, select it then click Open:
If all goes well you will see the following in the WinPwn status box:
Your iPhone should be connected to your computer at this time!
The Fifth Step: Create a custom firmware. Click the ipsw builder button:
And you will see this screen:
Check the Install Cydia box but only check the YouTube activation fix boxes if you do not have AT&T as your carrier: (I have service with AT&T so I am not checking YouTube fix or activating as instructed above).
Click the Custom Images tab at the top of the WinPwn screen:
Put a checkmark in the Use Custom Pictures box and you will be given some options. You can also load your own by clicking on the Boot Logo or Restore Logo buttons (files must be in .BMP, .PNG or .JPG format 420×320 max 100kb).
Download your bootloaders here.
Do not put anything in the payloads box unless you really know what you are doing. If you don’t know, or are not sure just leave it blank and move on.
Check what you want to do (I only added the bootloaders in this tab)
Active phone (If you already have a phone activated through AT&T do not select this)
Wipe everything
Baseband Updater
Neuter Bootloader
Downgrade 3.9
Unlock
Auto delete
Add bootloaders
At this point you are ready to create your custom firmware. Click the Build .ipsw button:
Choose a location for the custom firmware (I left it in the installer cache file folder) to be saved and give it a name:
The rest is simple:
The Sixth Step: Wait until your custom .ipsw file is created (May take a few minutes).
The Seventh Step: Click “Ipwner” and browse for the custom IPSW that you just created. This will pwn iTunes and allow you to flash Custom IPSW files via DFU mode (Don’t know how to enter DFU mode? Click here).
The Eighth Step: Once you have pwned ITunes, put your phone into DFU mode.
The Ninth Step: Once you are in DFU mode Itunes will pop up and then you can hold shift and click restore and browse to your custom IPSW file.
The Tenth Step: Wait for a while (it will depend on all of the information that you have on your iPhone).
The Eleventh Step: Enjoy your phone.

@GenghisPhilip
At the start of your tutorial you say that you jailbroke a 1st gen iPhone but through the tutorial I notice that you’ve used the 3G firmware ipsw.
Should us 1st genners be using the 3G file? I can’t seem to create a custom ipsw. Keep getting an error.
Thanks!

@oscar
you probably need to install the .NET framework, free from the Microsoft site
July 25th, 2008 at 4:54 pm
I am hearing all over that no one running Vista has successfully used WinPwn to jailbreak while almost everyone running XP was able to jailbreak without errors (mostly).
@oscar: Are you running Vista?
@Peter: What will the .NET framework do to help?
July 26th, 2008 at 6:52 am
@Peter
Thanks, i installed .NET framework and it worked fine, thanks

I apologize if this is the wrong place to address these issues but I need some help. read below.
I have intalled 2.0.0.1. I love the new features, but I have a few problems:
1. my iphone runs slower. applications take several seconds to open vs. prreviously opening within 1-2 seconds. Is there a fix to this?
2. when I connected my phone to itunes to load music, my newly downloaded applications from the apps store were rendered useless. Is this normal?
3. Cydia is showing “updates” that I am not familiar with. Should I install or hold off?

Hey guys, I was so excited I finally jailbroke my 3G; but i’m a little confused by cydia, I’ve got it and everything but I can’t run the NES app; it says there is no rom found.
Also, what’s the deal with installer.app for someone who has no clue about the difference between the two. I saw a cool app offered by installer.app can I get that and how?
Thanks

Will this instruction unlock my new 3G Iphone for use with other GSM carriers or it will only allow me to install applications?
August 5th, 2008 at 9:38 am
hmm… I just attempted to use winpwn to upgrade my 1.1.4 to 2.0
Unfortunately, since Apple has released the 2.0.1 firmware, winpwn doesn’t seem to recognize it.
05/08/2008 10:18:43 AM - This is winpwn ver.:2.0.0.3 RC1
05/08/2008 10:18:43 AM - Apple Mobile Device Support Version 2.0.1.5 installed.
05/08/2008 10:18:45 AM - 62 logos available online
05/08/2008 10:18:45 AM - 0 custom payloads available online
05/08/2008 10:20:55 AM - Unknown file: C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates\iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore.ipsw
I will have to wait for WinPwn to be updated before I try to upgrade.
Any other ideas??
